This page describes the basic steps to make a read-only NFS root netboot system. This is designed to be one NFS root for many client nodes, for example, in a cluster with many compute nodes and one master file server. Creating something bootable by NFS is fairly easy with Debian, most of these steps deal with small adjustments. The key things here are:

Basic setup

Optional configuration

Do all administrative tasks by chrooting into the root on the NFS server. Do your chrooting via debian_chroot=NAME chroot root/ (or somehow setting the debian_chroot environment variable) will put an indicator in your prompt letting you know that you are currently chrooted.

Put scripts and customizations in /etc/rc.local.
